Euglenids
The euglenids are a unique protist, acting like both plant and animal. They are freshwater and unicellular. The most common euglenid is Euglena deces (typically just called Euglena). It is a mixotroph, containing chlorophyll and undergoing photosynthesis while also being able to ingest food. Euglena has two flagella (although one is very long and visable while the other is quite short and difficult to spot). Euglena also has eyespots which detects light. As in certain other protists, Euglena has a contractile vacuole which rids the body of excess water (since it lives in fresh water, water in continually trying to enter the cell which would explode if it didn't have a means to expel it.)
